Crowns

A crown covers the whole visible tooth and protects it when too little is left for a filling.

01

When a crown is recommended

For a badly damaged or broken tooth, a large old filling, a tooth weakened after root canal treatment, or to improve a tooth’s shape and colour. Dr. Kirov will tell you whether a crown is really needed or whether the tooth can be restored with a smaller procedure.

02

How it works

At the first visit the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic and an impression is taken. Until the permanent crown is ready you wear a temporary one, so the tooth is protected and you can eat and smile normally. At the next visit the permanent crown is tried in, your bite is checked and the crown is cemented.

03

Materials

Dr. Kirov offers zirconia, ceramic and composite crowns. Zirconia is very strong and suits back teeth as well, ceramic gives the most natural look on front teeth, and composite is a more affordable option. The choice depends on the tooth’s position, your bite and your expectations — we discuss the options and the cost in advance.

If a tooth is missing, it can be replaced with a bridge.

04

Caring for a crown

Clean a crown like a natural tooth — with a brush and floss. Regular check-ups help keep an eye on the edge where the crown meets the tooth.

The information on this page is general. Your treatment plan is decided after an examination with Dr. Ivan Kirov.
