Why it matters
Tartar builds up even with regular brushing, most often behind the lower front teeth and around the molars. It irritates the gums and can lead to bleeding, bad breath, receding gums and gum disease.
How it works
Tartar above and below the gum line is removed with an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments. The teeth are then polished so they are smooth and hold less plaque. The procedure is usually painless; if your teeth or gums are sensitive, tell us — we can work more gently or use a local anaesthetic.
Afterwards
Your gums may be slightly tender for a day or two. Dr. Kirov will show you which areas you tend to miss and how to use floss or interdental brushes.
How often
For most people a clean once or twice a year is enough. If you build up tartar quickly or have gum problems, more often, as your dentist advises.
